Chapter 12

My Awakening

It was a January evening in 2004. I was a content and devoted Jehovah's Witness still in good standing in my congregation. This particular night I happened to be perusing the Internet, as usual. I don't remember now what it was I was looking for, but I sure found something that I wasn't looking for: I stumbled upon this rumor that the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society had been a NonGovernmental Organization in association with the United Nations for ten years, and that by doing so they had agreed to support the UN! I laughed at the thought: The Watchtower Organization considered the United Nations to be The Beast mentioned in the book of Revelation

– of course they'd never have any association with them! Examples of their view of the UN can be seen in their literature:

“The United Nations is actually a worldly confederacy against Jehovah God and his dedicated Witnesses on earth.” (The Watchtower, September 1, 1987, p.20)

“Human governments have schemed to form the most brazen and defiant conspiracy against divine rule that has ever existed. (Compare Isaiah 8:11-13.) They have done so, not once, but twice, creating first the League of Nations and then the United Nations.” (Awake! December 8, 1990, p.24)

What was the “disgusting thing that causes desolation” in the first century, and what is it today? (Matthew 24:15) [gt chapter 111] In 66 c.e it was the Roman armies that surrounded Jerusalem; today it is the United Nations. (Our Kingdom Ministry, August 1994 pp.5-6 Theocratic Ministry School Review) Anointed Christians are like alien residents living in tents apart from this system of things. Not even a plague draws near their tent. Whether our hope is heavenly or earthly, we are no part of the world, and we are not infected by such spiritually deadly plagues as its immorality, materialism, false religion, and worship of the “wild beast” and its “image” the United Nations. (The Watchtower, November 15, 2001 p.19, paragraph 14)

However, as I thought about this rumor I decided I'd better prepare a solid answer for it, since I might run into this lie in my door-to-door work. It would be pretty humiliating to come up against this and have no prepared response to defend my faith with! So I began by researching this rumor in order to find it's weaknesses (because every rumor has a weakness). As I researched this rumor online I found that it had been circulating for couple of years, but still I had no hard proof for defense. All I found was the same basic rumor repeated over and over again on different websites. Because I could see that this was apparently a widespread rumor, I was surprised that I hadn't heard it before. However, now that I knew it existed I couldn't let this go on the back burner; I needed to be able to defend The Organization if someone ever confronted me with this. So I tried a different tactic: I contacted the United Nations Department of Public Information and asked them point blank about the rumor.
